Our Vows

When I first saw you, I thought you were out of my league. It quickly became evident that was not so. I mean, you have to be pretty brave to order a chili cheese dog on the first date. Braver to marry the daughter of an Iranian, braver to wed the sister of a divorce lawyer, and even braver to kill... all the spiders.
Spider killing is only one of the things I love about you. Here are some others:
-
Your excitement and aura when you bring home a good haul from Half Price Books.
-
The way you feel like you need permission to enjoy a guilty pleasure or extravagant purchase.
-
Your bright smile when I encourage you to make it.
-
The way my heart fills and warms when I see you.
There are many things in life that we cannot promise, but here are a few I intend to keep:
I promise, Collin, to do my best in communicating with you. I promise to work on being a better listener, because you deserve to be heard, always. I promise to support your endeavors to grow. I'll do my best to brighten your days—or at the very least, try not to make them worse.
Ultimately, as your better half for the rest of our lives, I vow to consider your needs and how my decisions affect you in each choice I make.
When you came to me six days ago and said you were anxious because you hadn't yet written your vows, I told you I hadn't written mine either. I wasn't anxious, though; I knew I could never write the perfect vows—because the love I have for you could never be quite captured in any form of words.
I couldn't ask for anyone better. I am the luckiest person of all. I love you, Collin.

I know that it won't surprise you to hear that I fell for you very quickly—but come on, look at you, how could I not? I fell for you so completely that I moved to Illinois to be with you as you began attending medical school. Ever since then, I've tried my best to make sure that you eat at least one real meal (which doesn't consist of candy, cupcakes, or cheesecake) every day and get at least a few hours of sleep every night as you suffer through medical school.
Over the last five years, I've found new things to love about you each day:
-
I love that you eat Snyder's pretzels with a spoon so that you don't have to wash your hands after you're done snacking.
-
I love that you think your BMW wagon is the coolest car in the world.
-
I love that your idea of a fun Friday night consists of staying up late sewing and drinking pastry sours.
-
I love how often you tell me that you had cheesecake and/or a cupcake for breakfast.
But most of all, I love your relentless optimism in the face of adversity. It is a constant source of strength for me, and I cannot express how much I appreciate you for it.
I promise to kill every spider I find in our home and not tell you about the ones that you don't see, so that you're not living in constant fear of them.
I promise to wash the dishes after dinner when you tell me that you really don't want to (try not to take advantage of that one too often).
I promise to tell you about any cute dogs that I saw throughout my day when we're apart.
I never imagined myself getting married before I met you. Now I can't picture a future where I'm not your husband. I can't wait to spend the rest of my life with you as your friend and partner in all things.

would kiss again
